life work
I create large scale installations and sculpture out of lightweight materials, such as translucent vellum, sheer fabric, and flexible screen. These lightweight materials define shape, space and volume. The inherent qualities of the materials I use shape the work. The drape of a sheer fabric, the flexibility and durability of screen affect the shape and size of the objects they will create. Environmental forces such as gravity, invisible air, light and shadow act on the physical media and are integral to its realization. In creating large works with delicate materials, I juxtapose fragility and strength of presence.
My inspiration comes from nature, from the female form and from the subconscious. I spend time in nature observing its forms, structures and themes: trees, leaves, birds in flight. I am influenced by my study of the figure, drawing on the shapes and curves of the female body and its attire. I am interested in the ideas of feminism and femininity, and where the two intersect at a place of both power and vulnerability. I am also influenced by the subconscious, gleaning ideas from my dreams and waking musings. I translate these inspirations and ideas into formal structures, which reflect their origin, to create atmospheric, playful and ethereal environments.
